Choose thermofoil if the budget is tight and you want a perfectly even white front, easy to clean, with moulded profiles and no joints. Provided no door sits against the oven without a side heat shield.
Choose painted MDF if…
Choose painted MDF if you want a true shaker door, a custom colour, or the option to repair and repaint in ten years. A chip fills and touches up; a thermofoil film that lifts does not stick back down, the door gets replaced.

Thermofoil
A PVC film thermoformed onto MDF, which allows continuous shapes with no joints and a perfectly uniform finish.
What they don't tell you Heat delaminates the film. A door immediately beside an oven with no side heat shield eventually blisters, and that is not covered by warranty.
Painted MDF
The substrate behind shaker doors. Its real advantage is repairability: a chip fills and touches up, and the whole kitchen can be repainted in ten years.
What they don't tell you Frame joints can telegraph a hairline with seasonal humidity swings, pronounced in Quebec between winter heating and humid summers.
Worth knowing before you sign
"Thermofoil or MDF" rests on a misunderstanding: thermofoil is not an alternative to MDF, it is applied over it. What you are really comparing is two finishes on the same board. The finish decides how long the door lasts, not the board.
