What settles it
Take l-shape if…
Choose the L if the kitchen opens onto a dining or living space, or if you want a table in it. Only two walls leaves the rest of the room free, and it is the layout most tolerant of dimensions.
Take u-shape if…
Choose the U if the kitchen is a closed room and storage is the priority. Three working walls give the most counter for a given area, but you need at least 2.50 m between opposite arms for it to be liveable.

Worth knowing before you sign
The L has one inside corner, the U has two. Each needs a lazy Susan or corner drawer, or it becomes the most wasted space in the kitchen. Count them in the quote.
